10 Wellness Tips To Stay Inspired & Healthy In The Dead Of Winter

Winter can be a time where wellness goes out the window. You can find yourself eating crappy foods, working out way less (or not at all) and overall feeling unmotivated to do anything but go to work then go home and repeat. Even though the freezing temps and the slow energy can really put you in a slump when it comes to your health and wellness, here are 10 suggestions to put more pep in your step and keep your spirits up.

  1. Take Vitamin D

For most of us, we haven’t been in the sunshine for 5 months now. That’s a long time! The sunshine is the best way to get Vitamin D and since that’s not a possibility, turning to Vitamin D supplements is the next best thing. Our bodies need Vitamin D to fight diseases, depression and aid in weight loss. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, in contrast to water-soluble vitamins, the body has no easy way of getting rid of fat-soluble vitamins. Because of this, excessive amounts may build up inside the body so make sure to take the appropriate dose.

  1. Stay active

How tempting it is to cancel the gym membership and wait till spring has sprung to start working out again? If you’re not feeling the desire to “go hard or go home” try a different workout. Consider doing lower impact workouts like yoga, Pilates, barre or indoor cycling. You’ll be so thankful you didn’t stop completely come spring. If you don’t use it, you do lose it! Keeping a base will make it that much easier to do more when you’re in the mood.

If you aren’t using the sauna at your gym or going to a gym with a sauna, you’re missing out big time! Considering that some days the high temperature can be 10, walking inside a sauna feels like a tropical paradise. You’ll experience heat that you miss and crave while caring for your mind and body. Not only is it nice and warm, saunas help to ease tension, relax the mind and sweat out toxins.

How often do we think “I want to read more!”? What better time than the winter to read the books we’ve had on our list that we haven’t had the time to get to. Visit a bookstore and stock up or download a few books to your Kindle. If you’re already reading a lot or it’s not exciting you at the moment, consider getting into podcasts to pass the time.

  1. Book a trip

So you’ve had it. You’re cold, blah and need a change…book a trip! Even if it’s just for a weekend, go somewhere warm or to a completely new place you’ve never been. You’ll feel rejuvenated and come back with a much better perspective for the rest of the winter. Plus it’ll give you something to look forward to!

  1. Eat nutrient dense foods

It’s inevitable that you make some unhealthy food choices during the winter. Instead of feeling guilty about it, make sure to add in nutrient dense foods to ensure your getting the vitamins and minerals you need.
